How to Create your own Directory and make money from that

Having your own directory and making money from that is nowadays popular. Almost every person who has his own site also has a directory site, where other people can submit their sites in. Most of them are making money from that, other have different positive business plans from that. With your own directory you can make different plans to learn money, this is why is good to have your own one. With help of some friends and forums I made one by myself, PR-dir.org it is free to submit your site in it. First it was hard for me to create one, but after some help I realize that is really easy to make one. So in this post I will try to write some info how to make your own Directory and how to make money from that.

1.Buying domain and hosting plan

First you need to buy a domain name for your own Directory. Try to choose one and buy it, it is recommended to buy .com, .net or .org domain which are mostly used. Also you need to buy hosting plan, or you can use the one you already own.

2.Installing Directory script and creating Directory site

After you bought domain and made a new folder in your web host, you can now install Directory script. Mostly used is PHPLD script, you have different PHPLD scripts, PHPLD 2.1.2 is free to download, PHPLD 3+ is payable. So it is your choice which one to use. Follow installation steps in Readme file, which is located with PHPLD files.

3.Choosing Directory site theme

After you successfully installed Directory PHPLD script, you can now install theme of your own choice. You need to be careful for which version of PHPLD is theme. After you downloaded the theme, you simply install it (check if there is installation info file in theme folder).

4.How to make money from your Directory

After your Directory site is placed and working, you can now chose which plan of making money from your Directory you will use.

you can place AdSense or other PPC ads
you can place PPM ads
you can place Affiliate program links
you can place Amazon or CJ,ClickBank ads

This are some basics making money plans, which really don’t generate much money. If your directory is popular then it can generate some money from that, but if it is new usually you won’t make much of it. The best thing you can do from directory, is to do something with users who submitted site EMAILS. You need to write in “Submit your site” page, that users who submit their site approve that you can send things to them via EMAIL.

After you get thousand of users who submitted site, you will get also thousand of their EMAILS. What you will do with that list, is your choice. You can promote different Sites by email them, or you can send emails with affiliate url in it and hope they buy something, etc.

5.How to promote your Directory site

Usually with Directory promotion there is no need to do much work. Basic things to do is to place your Directory site URL in your FORUM signature or write a post on forum about free submission on your Directory site. Place Directory site url also on your sites sidebar links. Promotion will come with time, you need to hope that people will add your Directory site in different Directory lists and you will gain some backlinks and users from that.

Is it legal?
I’d like to make a directory of all French Business in NYC. Can I just list them or do I need to ask their (legal) permissions to be on the list?

Do you know when PHPLD 3+ becomes free version ?

I’ve tested PHPLD 2 and I found that their permalink isn’t good enough.
